Stephen Furness was a member of West Hartlepool Town Council in 1897 and Durham County Council in 1898. He was a Justice of the Peace, and a member of the Hartlepool Port and Harbour Commission. He was the Member of Parliament for Hartlepool from 1910. When his uncle Christopher Furness died in 1912, Stephen became chairman of Furness, Withy and Company. He was also chairman of:

- Cargo Fleet Iron Company Ltd.
- Richardsons, Westgarth and Company Ltd.
- Weardale Steel, Coal and Coke Company Ltd.
- Wingate Coal Company Ltd.
and was a Director of many other companies. He was created a Baronet in 1913.
What was his personal life?
Stephen Furness was born on 26th May 1872. He was educated at Ashville College, Harrogate. His hobbies were farming and shooting. In 1899 he married Eleanor Forster, and they had three sons and one daughter. They lived at Tunstall Grange, West Hartlepool. Stephen Furness died in an accident while on holiday on 6th August 1914.
